Last year was grander with a rangoli and what not, this year is pretty sober, thanks to a deadline until the day Navarathri began. Add to it a pinch of lethargy and a spoon of general illness all around. Anyways,
Your daughter is absolutely beautiful! I love her little park :))
Laki, it is so wonderful that you share photographs with us, I love seeing the inside of India, not what the media shows. The internet helps us realize we are all the same, just in different places.
Navarathri means "nine nights". These are nine days of glorifying the Goddess - the personification of all the energy that sustains the world. The religious significance is that the days are spent praying to the Goddess of wealth, valor and learning. In a way, it recognizes the Goddess in all of us.
The "kolu" or the arrangement of dolls in steps is a South Indian (Tamil, in particular) practice. It is more like a fun thing to do, and we invite all the women we know to come and see our little (or big) kolus. We sing at each other's kolus and generally have fun.

Lakshmi.. I am so happy I came to your blog today. I was wondering about your golu this year. Looks fantastic! Wish I could have been there in person and to see Vasundara and her park!! I remember celebrating golu at your house with your grandmom many years ago now and the small golu gift bag :) I have been doing golu now every year. This year more amazing than ever Krishna posted the photos.. http://flickr.com/photos/kris_kumar/sets/72157607752525134/
